Europe takes a leap in digital sovereignty and space innovation with the launch of the 5NETSAT mission by OQ Technology. The mission, supported by a €2.5m grant from the European Innovation Council, aims to deliver secure 5G satellite messaging and emergency alerts directly to unmodified smartphones.

Omar Qaise, CEO of OQ Technology, expressed his enthusiasm about this milestone, highlighting the mission’s significance in establishing Europe’s first commercial Direct-to-Mobile satellite constellation. The 5NETSAT project demonstrates the technical viability, scalability, sustainability, and life-saving potential of secure, space-based mobile communication.

5NETSAT will pioneer a 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) in Low Earth Orbit, facilitating satellite-based delivery of emergency notifications and SMS messages to 5G smartphones. This breakthrough technology will enable real-time public safety communications during emergencies, cyberattacks, and support secure coordination for emergency agencies and first responders.

Beyond its technical capabilities, the mission is poised to have a substantial impact socially, economically, and environmentally. It promotes digital inclusion, enhances public safety, fosters innovation, creates high-value jobs, and opens new commercial opportunities. Moreover, it aligns with EU policy frameworks and contributes to global Sustainable Development Goals.

With the backing of EIC funding, 5NETSAT sets the stage for OQ Technology’s comprehensive deployment of a global D2M constellation, ushering in a new era of secure and resilient mobile connectivity across Europe and beyond.
