5G has rapidly advanced in Africa, with 79 telecom operators investing in the technology. In 2024, 5G accounted for 25% of mobile network coverage in urban areas, with over 26 million subscribers in sub-Saharan Africa. The continent saw the launch of commercial 5G networks in multiple countries, indicating a positive trend.

Including North Africa, particularly Tunisia and Egypt, the number of telecom operators deploying 5G is on the rise, showcasing a promising future for faster connectivity across the region. Challenges such as the high cost of 5G-compatible phones and lack of practical use cases have slowed down adoption.

The primary barriers to widespread 5G adoption in Africa include mobile device affordability, limited practical applications, and insufficient infrastructure. Overcoming these obstacles will be crucial for leveraging 5G as a catalyst for African economies’ growth by 2030, as estimated by the GSMA.
