Andhra Pradesh’s IT Minister, Nara Lokesh, did not confirm the Google development but stated the state has secured 1.6 GW of data center commitments.

Key Highlights:

  • Asia’s Largest Data Center: Google plans to invest $6B in a 1 GW facility in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, including $2B for renewable energy.
  • Strategic Expansion: The project adds to Google’s growing footprint in India and Southeast Asia, including new cable and cloud infrastructure.
  • Andhra’s Digital Push: The state targets 6 GW of data center capacity and 3 subsea cable landings to rival Mumbai’s digital connectivity.

Google is set to invest $6 billion in a hyperscale data center in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project includes $2 billion for renewable energy infrastructure to power the facility. This marks Google’s first data center of this scale in India and the largest in Asia, showing a broader regional expansion trend with projects in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Google has been expanding its digital footprint in India with cloud regions in Mumbai and Delhi. Additionally, a sovereign AI cloud in partnership with Airtel Business is planned for later. The investment aligns with Google’s $10 billion pledge to India’s digital ecosystem, including a stake in Reliance Jio Infocomm.

Andhra Pradesh aims to increase its data center capacity from 1.6 GW to 6 GW within five years. The state plans to install three subsea cable landing stations to boost connectivity, aiming to surpass Mumbai’s existing capacity.

Lokesh highlighted the need for up to 10 GW of power generation for these projects. The majority will be sourced from renewables, with some coal-fired generation to ensure constant power for data operations.

As AI adoption grows, India is becoming a significant player in AI-driven data infrastructure, witnessing an increase in AI data centers to support sectors like healthcare, finance, and smart cities.
