A Milestone Agreement for Zanzibar’s Digital Future

Airtel Tanzania has taken a significant step toward advancing digital connectivity and inclusion in Zanzibar through a strategic partnership with the Zanzibar Communication and ICT Infrastructure Agency (ZICTIA). The two organizations recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at tackling critical infrastructure challenges and expanding access to reliable telecom and internet services. This partnership represents a crucial move to bridge the digital divide and empower underserved communities within the region.

Driving Broadband Connectivity and Financial Inclusion

The MoU outlines a framework that focuses on enhancing broadband connectivity while fostering digital inclusion in Zanzibar. By undertaking collaborative infrastructure projects, Airtel Tanzania and ZICTIA aim to improve network access and expand the reach of internet services to rural and underserved areas. Beyond infrastructure, the agreement also emphasizes promoting financial inclusion by expanding and simplifying access to digital financial services for both individuals and businesses. This ambitious effort aims to revolutionize how communities interact with technology-driven solutions for education, healthcare, commerce, and beyond.

Public-Private Partnerships for Innovation

Speaking about the initiative, Zanzibar’s Minister for Infrastructure, Communication and Transport, Khalid Salum Mohammed, highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in accelerating the region’s digital transformation. “We believe in public-private partnerships, not just as policy, but as a practical pathway to accelerate e-government, e-learning, e-health, and e-commerce – especially in underserved communities,” said the minister. Such partnerships promise significant long-term benefits, empowering local communities while aligning with the government’s vision for a robust and inclusive digital economy.

Positioning Zanzibar for a Technology-Driven Future

Charles Kamoto, Managing Director of Airtel Tanzania, emphasized the shared commitment of both entities to position Zanzibar as a hub for innovation and growth. “We are investing in infrastructure and partnerships that empower communities, support government priorities, and position Zanzibar for a future defined by innovation and inclusive growth,” Kamoto stated. The collaboration signals new opportunities for Zanzibar to adopt e-government services, improve digital skills, and prepare its population for active participation in the global digital economy.

This pivotal agreement underscores Airtel Tanzania and ZICTIA’s shared vision for leveraging technology to empower communities, support economic development, and deliver meaningful social impact. As Zanzibar moves forward toward a more connected future, this partnership serves as a strong foundation for sustainable technological progress across the region.
