Equinix’s Bold Approach to Powering Sustainable Data Centers

Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), a global leader in digital infrastructure, is forging innovative partnerships to address the pressing energy demands of modern data centers. As a company pivotal to the world’s digital ecosystem, Equinix is collaborating with leading energy providers to develop reliable and sustainable electricity solutions. Its diversified power strategy exemplifies a forward-thinking approach, incorporating traditional utility partnerships and next-generation nuclear energy to ensure the scalability and resilience of its infrastructure.

This initiative comes at a critical time, with global electricity consumption growing at a rapid pace. According to the International Energy Agency, consumption is projected to rise by 4% annually through 2027, driven by expanding data center requirements, accelerating industrial manufacturing, and increasing electrification worldwide. By focusing on cutting-edge energy technologies and collaborating directly with power utilities, Equinix aims to mitigate these strains while supporting its growth and that of its customers.

Investing in Advanced Energy Technologies

Equinix is advancing the global energy transition by investing in emerging technologies, such as fuel cells and nuclear power, to improve energy efficiency while strengthening energy grids. The company’s partnership with Bloom Energy has led to the deployment of solid-oxide fuel cells capable of generating over 100MW of on-site power across 19 data centers in the United States. This technology has supported the elimination of approximately 285,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions and saved billions of gallons of embedded water.

Furthering its commitment to clean energy, Equinix is pioneering the use of small modular reactors (SMRs) and other nuclear technologies. In collaboration with innovative companies like Oklo, Equinix has secured 500MW from Oklo’s Aurora powerhouses, marking the first such agreement between a data center operator and a nuclear energy provider. Similarly, deals with Radiant for microreactors and ULC-Energy for SMR deployment in the Netherlands solidify Equinix’s leadership in modern nuclear innovation.

Future-Proofing Energy Infrastructure

Anticipating a rising demand that strains traditional grids, Equinix is also committed to infrastructure improvements. Current projects include funding transmission system upgrades, building substations, and implementing backup solutions to increase grid reliability. Beyond electricity supply, Equinix has adopted advanced data center designs aimed at capturing efficiency gains. Its adoption of ASHRAE A1 Allowable standards in 2022, coupled with advanced liquid cooling technologies across more than 100 locations, demonstrates its proactive approach to optimizing energy consumption while minimizing environmental impact.

Equinix’s 2030 goal of achieving 100% clean and renewable energy across all operational sites is well within reach, as the company has already hit 96% renewable energy coverage globally. With over 250 locations operating on 100% renewable energy as of 2024, Equinix sets a benchmark for environmentally responsible corporate practices.

Empowering the Digital Economy

“Access to consistent and sustainable electricity is pivotal for supporting infrastructure that drives AI, cloud computing, and advanced technologies,” said Raouf Abdel, Executive Vice President of Global Operations at Equinix. As the digital economy grows, Equinix envisions itself as a critical enabler by actively contributing to strengthening the global energy grid.

From nuclear innovation to renewable energy adoption, Equinix’s efforts resonate as a call for action within the data center industry. Its investments in cutting-edge solutions highlight the importance of collaboration between utilities, governments, and private enterprises. Equinix isn’t just powering data centers—it’s powering the future, ensuring scalable, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure for the generations to come.
