The agency’s flagship Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) programme has been instrumental in transforming groundbreaking ideas into operational products and services. By fostering partnerships between industry and academia, ARTES enables rapid responses to emerging global market demands while laying the groundwork for Europe’s leadership in critical areas such as optical and quantum communications, 5G connectivity, and space-based communications solutions.
One of the key outcomes of this year’s funding commitments is the continuation of projects such as HummingSat, Novacom, and HydRON. These initiatives seek to advance leading-edge technologies, including the creation of an “internet of space” and the expansion of optical ground station networks. The ARTES programme will also support Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technologies through projects like Eagle-1 and QKDSat, which play a pivotal role in ensuring secure communications, particularly in sensitive domains such as aviation, maritime operations, and cybersecurity.
Expanding 5G and Multi-Orbital Satellite Integration

With over €2 billion in subscription commitments, ESA is poised to deliver unmatched leadership, autonomy, and competitiveness in the satellite communications domain,” said Jaffart.
