KESSA: Empowering a New Generation of African Storytellers
The art of storytelling in Africa is evolving dramatically, and a groundbreaking initiative called KESSA aims to lead this transformation. Launched by Story School at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in collaboration with the French-African Foundation, KESSA is an ambitious program designed to revolutionize African narratives. This pan-African initiative will mentor 30 emerging talents, equipping them with the tools, training, and networks to reshape how Africa is perceived globally.

KESSA derives its name from the Arabic and African dialect word for “story,” reflecting the program’s mission to connect culture, heritage, and imagination. This innovative residency will bring together creators, journalists, influencers, media entrepreneurs, and cultural visionaries to challenge outdated stereotypes, celebrate diversity, and elevate Africa’s voice in global narratives. With African cultural and creative industries expanding rapidly, initiatives like KESSA are crucial in strengthening the continent’s presence in these vital sectors.

The KESSA residency program will take place from March 23 to 28, 2026, at UM6P’s Story School campus in Rabat, Morocco. Participants, aged between 25 and 40, will engage in masterclasses, hands-on workshops on digital storytelling, writing, and performance arts, and collaborate with renowned African and international experts. The program also includes professional network building and tailored support for creating original work. Beyond the residency, laureates will remain part of a structured pan-African network, ensuring continued collaboration and visibility.

This includes coverage in the press, broadcast, and digital media, along with influencer partnerships. As Meriem Idrissi Kaitouni, Director of UM6P Story School, emphasizes, the program is designed to foster a positive and ambitious representation of the continent. Applications are open until January 10, 2026, and promising storytellers from cinema, literature, music, media, social innovation, and other creative fields are encouraged to apply.
As Nachouat Meghouar, Managing Director of the French-African Foundation, notes, KESSA will play a central role in shaping the future of African narratives, empowering creators to transform perceptions and inspire generations to come. To learn more or apply, visit www.kessa.africa.
