PLDT, a Philippines-based telecommunications provider, has reported a substantial reduction in cable and telecom equipment theft incidents across 2025. This development is attributed to enhanced partnerships with local government units, police authorities, and community organizations. Through the expansion of its “Bayanihan” asset protection initiative, the company has successfully implemented stronger security measures to safeguard its network infrastructure. PLDT’s mobile unit, Smart, also played an integral part in these efforts, focusing on building trust and coordination within local communities.

The Bayanihan program emerges as a key pillar in PLDT-Smart’s enhanced security strategy, emphasizing collaboration with barangays and municipal authorities in cities like Quezon City, Makati, Davao, and municipalities such as Calamba and Dasmarinas. These partnerships have facilitated structured coordination sessions between PLDT-Smart’s asset protection team and local stakeholders, enabling quicker response times and improved incident reporting. According to Leo Gonzales, PLDT-Smart’s vice president and head of property, fostering strong community ties has been critical for the success of these preventative measures, ensuring uninterrupted service for customers.
Improvement in Theft Prevention Statistics

PLDT recorded nearly 1,000 theft-related cases in 2024, with copper cables being a frequent target. Some neighborhoods in Manila experienced theft incidents approximately every three days. However, from January to November 2025, the company saw a remarkable 34% reduction in reports of theft-related incidents compared to the previous year. Similarly, the number of apprehended suspects dropped by 24% over the same period. Romeo Basco, the head of security and central command at PLDT-Smart, attributed this success to strengthened security measures and quick responses powered by community partnerships.
