Boldyn Networks and Virgin Media O2 Enhance 5G Connectivity at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light

In a significant step forward for sports venues and digital infrastructure, Boldyn Networks and Virgin Media O2 have unveiled cutting-edge 5G connectivity enhancements at Sunderland’s iconic Stadium of Light. As part of the Sunderland Open Network Ecosystem (SONET) project, this initiative introduces the UK’s first full neutral host RAN managed service in a high-density demand venue, offering unparalleled connectivity for fans and visitors.
Revolutionizing Fan Experiences with Boldyn’s Connectivity-as-a-Service
At the heart of this transformation stands Boldyn’s Connectivity-as-a-Service (CaaS), powered by advanced Open RAN technology. The solution features a fully virtualized O-RAN-based platform that significantly reduces space and power consumption by up to 60% when compared to traditional systems, aligning with sustainability goals. Key innovations include an evolved Distributed Antenna System (DAS) that supports the O-RAN fronthaul interface standard and the groundbreaking JMA XRAN® technology stack. By seamlessly integrating with Boldyn’s Network Management System (NMS), the service automates operations and reduces costs, ensuring a superior user experience for over 49,000 spectators during events.
The enhanced network opens new possibilities for fans attending matches, concerts, and events, such as seamless social media sharing, smooth video uploads and downloads, and even features like in-seat food ordering. This state-of-the-art infrastructure represents a seismic shift in how fans interact with live sports and entertainment, offering a more immersive and digitally enabled experience to enhance engagement and safety.
Setting New Standards Through Collaboration
The success of the Stadium of Light project underscores the value of collaboration between public and private entities. Supported in part by funding from the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), the SONET initiative not only deploys high-speed 5G connectivity at the stadium but also targets broader digital transformation projects throughout Sunderland. This milestone aligns seamlessly with Sunderland AFC’s commitment to elevating the fan experience and supports the city’s broader vision for innovation and growth in the digital age.
The deployment is especially timely as the Stadium of Light prepares to host the opening match of the Women’s Rugby World Cup and Sunderland AFC’s return to the Premier League. Enhanced 5G capabilities will play a pivotal role in ensuring smooth connectivity for fans and international visitors, cementing Sunderland’s reputation as a digital leader in the UK.
A Vision for the Future of Connectivity
Boldyn Networks and Virgin Media O2 aim to redefine industry standards with their groundbreaking CaaS technology. Brendan O’Reilly, CEO of UK & Ireland at Boldyn Networks, stated, “The launch of CaaS at the Stadium of Light is a testament to Boldyn’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of digital connectivity and setting new standards in the industry.” Similarly, Virgin Media O2’s Director of Mobile Access Engineering, Dr. Rob Joyce, emphasized their shared commitment to delivering exceptional experiences, adding, “Our Mobile Transformation Plan ensures fans enjoy connectivity that matches the energy and excitement of the live entertainment they love.”
David Bruce, Chief Business Officer of Sunderland AFC, further highlighted how this advancement aligns with the club’s vision and investment priorities. “This technology will unlock incredible opportunities to enhance the matchday experience for our supporters through faster connectivity, richer content, and more immersive engagement than ever before,” Bruce explained. Through this collaboration, the Stadium of Light not only becomes a symbol of innovation but contributes to a more connected and smarter environment for the entire region.
