Chinese authorities called in US tech giant Nvidia to address significant security issues related to one of its artificial intelligence (AI) chips, the top internet regulator of the country announced on Thursday.

Nvidia has been caught up in a fierce economic and technological battle between Beijing and Washington, with Chinese utilization of its cutting-edge “H20” semiconductors holding great importance.

The California-headquartered company disclosed earlier this month its decision to recommence the sale of H20 chips to China following assurances from Washington to lift export restrictions.

However, concerns from the American side persist, as legislators are considering mandates for Nvidia and other producers of high-tech AI chips to integrate location tracking functionalities.

Beijing’s primary internet overseer stated on Thursday that it had convened with Nvidia representatives to discuss newly identified “serious security issues” connected to the H20 chip.

The firm created this chip, a less potent version of its AI processing units, specifically for export to China.

The Cyberspace Administration of China requested Nvidia to elucidate the security risks like vulnerabilities and backdoors present in H20 chips distributed to China, and to furnish applicable supporting documentation, as per a statement shared on social media.

The statement highlighted that, as per US experts, location tracking and remote shutdown technologies for Nvidia chips are already fully developed.
