Deutsche Telekom has recently unveiled the new T Phone 3 and T Tablet 2, rebranded as the “AI-phone” and “AI-tablet” through a strategic partnership with Perplexity.

The German telecommunications leader aims to introduce these devices not only as mere hardware upgrades but as bridges to AI for all users. Central to this initiative is a dedicated magenta button on each device that grants direct access to the Perplexity Assistant.

This embedded AI helper is tailored to aid in a variety of daily activities. Users no longer require multiple standalone apps as the AI-phone serves as an all-in-one solution; from suggesting recipes for leftover ingredients to organizing vacations. The assistant responds to voice or text commands, activated by the magenta button or a double-click on the power key.

By interacting with preset applications, the system executes actions seamlessly. Serving as a personal assistant, it manages calendar entries and email summaries, or acts as a language expert for translating foreign menus. Additionally, it functions as a virtual travel planner, arranging trips, restaurant bookings through OpenTable, or taxi reservations via Uber. Other features include nutritional advice, workout plans, and shopping suggestions.

Dominique Leroy, Deutsche Telekom’s Board Member for Europe, emphasized the device’s convenience: “Through strategic partnerships, we are making the AI-phone accessible to people across Europe. It simplifies daily tasks and swiftly provides trustworthy information, allowing users to channel their efforts where they truly matter—where individuality, creativity, and personalization hold real significance.”

The emphasis on accessibility is reinforced by an attractive pricing structure. In Germany, the AI-phone retails at €149, while the AI-tablet is priced at €199. When bundled with a network plan, the devices are available for just one euro each.

This package includes an 18-month Perplexity Pro subscription complementary to the standard Perplexity Assistant, which remains permanently accessible on the devices. As a bonus, purchasers receive a three-month Picsart Pro license with an additional 500 credits monthly.

Deutsche Telekom’s launch of the AI phone and tablet extends beyond Germany, reaching customers in Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, and Slovakia starting today, albeit with pricing variations in different markets.

Aside from its AI capabilities, the new T Phone 3 and T Tablet 2 boast significant hardware upgrades. Both devices benefit from an enhanced chipset for improved performance and quicker charging times. Noteworthy AI tools are integrated into the AI-phone’s camera, enabling users to create AI avatars and edit image backgrounds collaboratively with Picsart.

The T Tablet 2 focuses on productivity and creativity, featuring a large screen powered by TCL NXTPAPER technology, offering three screen modes for reading, studying, or drawing. Users can purchase a compatible T-Pen stylus separately for €29.95. A “Pro” version of the AI-phone is slated for later release this year.

Sustainability was a key consideration for Deutsche Telekom. The T Phone 3 has obtained the company’s #GreenMagenta label and an impressive 90 Eco Rating in smartphone sustainability. The T Tablet 2 underscores a commitment to the circular economy, with 75% of its back panel crafted from recycled post-consumer plastic.

Deutsche Telekom is democratizing AI benefits to a broader audience. Through the MeinMagenta app, all customers can access “Magenta AI,” which offers free access to Perplexity’s answer engine and an AI-powered background editor for images from Picsart.

Claudia Nemat, Deutsche Telekom’s Board Member for Technology and Innovation, highlighted: “Artificial intelligence stands as the cornerstone technology of our era, carrying substantial transformative potential. Despite prevailing hesitations, we believe AI presents significant opportunities. To seize these, individuals must engage and experiment with AI tools. ‘Our’ AI-phone and Magenta AI features embedded within the app provide users with consolidated access to diverse AI services, enabling them to explore this cutting-edge technology firsthand.”

This release aligns with bullish market projections. IDC analysts anticipate that shipments of generative AI-capable smartphones will soar to 912 million units by 2028, constituting a substantial portion of the market. Canalys attributes this growth to escalating consumer demand for AI-driven functionalities and concurrent advancements in chipset technology.

A study by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech underscores that European consumers exhibit keen interest in AI features like real-time translation, enhanced camera capabilities, and search functionalities—all of which the new Deutsche Telekom device incorporates.
