TICAD 9, the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development, is crucial for Africa amid efforts to bridge investment gaps and enhance resilience to economic and climate challenges.

The African Development Bank (AfDB), a key multilateral lender in Africa, is at the forefront of this transformation, partnering with Japan and hosting side events at TICAD 9 to attract Japanese investments across various sectors like green hydrogen, transportation, health, agriculture, and education. Both AfDB and Japan share priorities of sustainable infrastructure and private sector growth, aiming for inclusive and resilient development.

Close collaborations with Japanese agencies such as JICA, JBIC, and NEXI are supporting AfDB’s objectives, especially in energy, transport, health, and climate resilience projects.

Japan’s longstanding partnership with AfDB dates back to 1973, strengthening over the years with mutual trust and innovation. Initiatives like the EPSA have led to significant co-financing for African businesses and infrastructure projects.

Japan has also aided human capital development and institutional reform in Africa through programs like PHRDG, showcasing a commitment to capacity-building in various sectors.

With the establishment of AfDB’s Asia External Representation office in Tokyo, Japan’s role as a crucial economic and diplomatic partner in the region has been highlighted. This office has facilitated partnerships with Asian countries and played a pivotal role in preparations for TICAD 9 and engagement with Japanese stakeholders through platforms like the Africa Investment Forum (AIF).

AIF, a transactional platform initiated in 2018, focuses on advancing projects to financial closure. Japan has been actively funding high-impact projects in key sectors and engaging in investment structuring and development.

Leadership transitions in both AfDB and Japan, alongside project collaborations like the Menengai geothermal power project in Kenya, signify a strong commitment to deeper cooperation and innovative development strategies.

The strategic alliance between AfDB and Japan exemplifies successful multilateral cooperation, driving Africa towards sustainable energy solutions and inclusive growth amidst global challenges.

Areas of focus include green infrastructure, climate-resilient projects, digital innovation, startups, impact funds, and private sector development, highlighting a shared vision for a more resilient and inclusive Africa.
