Enhancing Digital Connectivity in Northern Kenya through Fibre Optic Cable Project

The Government of Kenya, in collaboration with the World Bank, is spearheading a project to lay a high-capacity fibre optic cable along the Isiolo–Mandera corridor. This initiative is part of the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project (HoAGDP) aimed at boosting digital connectivity in Kenya’s northern regions and establishing cross-border links to enhance regional integration. To ensure a competitive procurement process, the ICT Authority has initiated an Early Market Engagement (EME) to gather insights from industry stakeholders. The project, funded by $750 million from the World Bank, also includes upgrading the Isiolo-Mandera Regional Road Corridor and infrastructure improvements to benefit over 3.2 million residents. Kenya and Ethiopia are committed to enhancing digital services and completing cross-border connectivity. The project is set for completion by June 2028, driving economic development in the region.
