Equinix’s xScale Data Center Expansion in the U.S.

Equinix, a leading data center company, is advancing its xScale business to the United States with significant growth plans. Trillions are being invested in data centers, driving the need for rapid expansion to meet escalating demands in the industry.

The company’s xScale design, tailored for hyperscale data centers, is a key focus after securing a $15 billion joint venture in late 2024. Equinix aims to establish a new xScale site in Hampton, Georgia, near Atlanta.

Equinix’s xScale Strategy

Tiffany Osias, the managing director of Equinix’s xScale business, highlighted the company’s pursuit of ‘generational’ assets at the KeyBanc Technology Leadership Forum. Equinix is strategically planning multi-hundred-megawatt campuses across the Americas as part of its expansion.

xScale vs. Retail Business

Equinix’s shift to xScale signifies a move towards larger deployments and fewer customers with significant footprints, differing from their retail business model. The xScale data centers offer higher capacity deployments, attracting customers needing at least 30 MW in capacity.

Addressing Demand and Challenges

Equinix acknowledges the challenges in managing power needs for data centers. Osias emphasized the criticality of addressing power availability challenges by adopting a comprehensive power strategy, including on-site generation options.

The company is focused on building durable data center platforms capable of handling various workloads efficiently. Equinix’s strategic site selection near major metro areas ensures optimal latency for clients.
