India’s New Telecom Policy Aims for Full 4G/5G Coverage by 2030

India is targeting universal 4G and 5G coverage by 2030, with a focus on rural fiber upgrades and 6G innovation. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced the National Telecom Policy 2025 to boost connectivity and digital infrastructure across the country.
The policy outlines strategic objectives, including enhancing India’s global position in telecom research, increasing rural fiber coverage, and supporting mobile network expansion in underserved areas. It also promotes innovation, aiming for a top-10 global position in 6G research and domestic telecom manufacturing growth.
Additionally, the policy emphasizes aligning service standards with global benchmarks, reducing compliance burdens, and enhancing the quality and transparency of network coverage. It anticipates doubling the telecom sector’s GDP contribution and attracting significant annual investments.
The DoT has also introduced new security guidelines for satellite communication providers to bolster national defenses amidst growing foreign interest in India’s satcom market.
Major players like Starlink, Project Kuiper, and Eutelsat-OneWeb are ramping up efforts to establish a stronger foothold in the country’s satellite-based connectivity landscape.
