The process of getting dedicated internet access (DIA) can take significantly longer than many businesses anticipate. According to data from Lightyear’s Enterprise ISP Experience Guide, the median time for DIA circuit installation hovers around 85 days. However, off-net installations—those requiring additional construction—can be far lengthier, reaching up to 227 days at the 90th percentile. These delays highlight the complexities within the installation process for enterprises striving for reliable internet access.

While these long wait times may initially frustrate customers, communication between ISPs and enterprises appears to play a crucial role in how delays are perceived. If carriers proactively communicate next steps and handle potential issues efficiently, they are often rewarded with higher Net Promoter Scores (NPS), even during extensive delays. Conversely, poor communication significantly impacts customer satisfaction, leading to lower NPS ratings, regardless of how fast or slow the installation may be.

Communication: A Key Factor in ISP Satisfaction

The quality of interaction between ISPs and their customers has a measurable effect on loyalty and satisfaction. According to Lightyear’s report, the average NPS for ISPs reached an impressive 4.16 out of 5—an indication that good communication strategies can make a significant difference. Dennis Thankachan, CEO and co-founder of Lightyear, emphasized how companies like Lightyear can help improve the overall customer communication experience by providing better support during complex installations.

Interestingly, the survey findings revealed that even when installations did not go as planned, customers awarded higher NPS scores to those providers who were transparent and proactive about delays. On the contrary, botched or missed installations where communication was lacking almost always led to one-star ratings. These insights underline the importance of clear and consistent communication throughout the telecom lifecycle management process.

Comparing Prices: DIA vs. Broadband

Pricing for internet services further distinguishes DIA from broadband offerings. Lightyear’s data shows that the median price for a 100 Mbps dedicated internet circuit is about $500 per month, equating to $5 per Mbps. This service includes dedicated, symmetric internet typically delivered via fiber, ensuring a stable and consistent connection for enterprise use.

In contrast, 100 Mbps broadband services are far more economical, with a median price of $140 per month or $1.40 per Mbps. However, this lower cost reflects a significant trade-off. Broadband services are often ‘best-effort’ connections, meaning they may experience fluctuations in bandwidth during peak usage times, while DIA guarantees consistent performance. These pricing trends highlight the unique needs of enterprises that prioritize reliability and speed over budget considerations.
