KESSA: Empowering the Next Generation of African Storytellers
A groundbreaking initiative is set to redefine the narrative of African storytelling and showcase the diverse voices of the continent. Mohammed VI Polytechnic University’s (UM6P) Story School, in partnership with the French-African Foundation, has launched KESSA. This pan-African programme is an innovative platform dedicated to empowering emerging talents in the fields of storytelling, media, and creative industries through a unique residency designed to foster collaboration and creativity.
Transforming the African Narrative

KESSA, which derives its name from the word ‘story’ in Arabic and various African dialects, is designed to celebrate Africa’s heritage while reimagining its future narratives. With cultural and creative industries on the continent growing at an unprecedented pace, the initiative aims to identify and nurture 30 emerging voices across African countries. These include creators, journalists, cultural entrepreneurs, scientists, and influencers who are committed to reshaping how Africa is perceived globally. By doing so, KESSA strives to amplify African stories and pave the way for a more diverse representation of the continent’s creativity and potential.

The highlight of KESSA is an immersive residency programme scheduled to take place from March 23 to March 28, 2026, at UM6P’s Story School campus in Rabat, Morocco. The residency will offer participants masterclasses by African and international experts, hands-on workshops focusing on modern storytelling techniques, and collaborative platforms for experimentation. Participants will explore narratives through writing, performance, digital media, sound, and visual storytelling, ultimately creating original works while becoming part of a dynamic pan-African network.
Participants also gain tailored professional support and the opportunity to connect with influential voices and institutions. According to Meriem Idrissi Kaitouni, Director of UM6P Story School, “KESSA is about changing representations and elevating the voices of Africa through unique storytelling infused with diversity and creativity.”
Eligibility and Long-Term Impact

KESSA is open to professionals aged 25 to 40 with at least five years of experience in storytelling-related fields, including literature, filmmaking, music, visual arts, media, archives, and social innovation. This ensures that participants bring rich expertise and varied perspectives to the programme. Furthermore, the initiative aims to leave a lasting impact by spotlighting the work of its participants through a pan-African media campaign, engaging institutional partners and digital influencers. “With KESSA, we support individuals who are reshaping African narratives in a way that represents an ambitious and positive vision for the continent,” says Nachouat Meghouar of the French-African Foundation.
Applications for KESSA are open until January 10, 2026. Aspiring storytellers from all corners of Africa are encouraged to apply on the official website: www.kessa.africa. This is more than a residency; it is a movement to empower the voices that will define the future of African storytelling, promising to inspire generations to come.
