Mauritania’s Ministry of Mines and Industry has introduced a cutting-edge digital platform to supervise and enhance transparency in mining and quarrying operations.

The initiative aims to boost transparency, ensure data accuracy, and simplify administrative processes related to licensing and monitoring.

Users accessing the platform are required to log in securely and can submit various data including technical details, production statistics, financial records, and updates on corporate social responsibility commitments.

Furthermore, permit holders have the option to send in different administrative requests such as sample submissions and approval petitions.

All information shared is strictly confidential following the guidelines of Article 59 of the mining law, which safeguards activity disclosures, environmental impact reports, administrative and financial oversight, and the transmission of mandatory details.

License holders are instructed by the ministry to reach out to regional offices or send an email to contact-mmi@mmi.gov.mr for login credentials and a user manual.

This digital platform launch comes at a time when Mauritania is still progressing in terms of e-governance. The nation currently holds the 174th position out of 193 in the United Nations Global E-Government Development Index with a score of 0.3491, highlighting a considerable deficit in digital infrastructure, online public service accessibility, and governmental technology utilization.

The digitalization of mining management is a pivotal advancement for a sector that makes up approximately 23% of Mauritania’s GDP. This move is expected to enhance transparency among stakeholders, potentially attracting more investors to the nation. By centralizing information and facilitating communication between the government and industry operators, the platform serves as a valuable tool for the meticulous and contemporary regulation of the country’s mining endeavors.
