MENA Region Leads Global Digital Transformation Through AI, 5G, and Cloud
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is setting a global benchmark for digital transformation, with countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE leading the way. At the recently held MWC25 Doha, the GSMA unveiled its groundbreaking report, Accelerating Digital Industries in the GCC and Wider MENA Region. The study highlights the region’s accelerated adoption of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), 5G connectivity, and cloud solutions, thanks to forward-looking national agendas and significant investments in digital infrastructure.

The report analyzes the responses of 850 enterprises across eight countries, revealing that MENA businesses are scaling AI, mobile connectivity, and cloud technology at a faster pace than many global counterparts. Industries such as healthcare, energy, and transportation are experiencing transformative changes, driven by digital solutions that enhance operational efficiency and improve the quality of life. Notably, between 2025 and 2030, enterprise spending on digital transformation in the region is expected to average an impressive 9.8% of revenues, signaling optimism about the future of the MENA digital economy.
Within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), countries have leveraged these technologies to deliver more accessible government services, empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and open up new opportunities for talented youth. This reinforces the idea that MENA is not only adopting these technologies but is actively building an ecosystem of innovation to thrive in a rapidly evolving global marketplace.
AI and 5G Adoption: Catalysts of Change

The GCC’s leadership in AI and 5G adoption underlines its position as a global frontrunner in digital transformation. According to the report, nearly 45% of MENA’s digital transformation spending will be directed toward AI and mobile technologies by the end of the decade. Generative AI, in particular, has seen a remarkable surge, with 39% of enterprises making advanced use of this technology across sectors such as automotive, financial services, and utilities. This underscores the far-reaching potential of AI in boosting productivity, enhancing cybersecurity, and optimizing business operations.
Meanwhile, 5G continues to be a cornerstone of MENA’s technological advancements, providing the infrastructure necessary for next-generation applications. Governments and private enterprises are relying on 5G to support innovations in robotics, smart cities, and autonomous mobility. Even as 6G remains in its early stages of development, the region is already positioning itself to reap the benefits of this future technology, particularly in enhancing connectivity, AI capabilities, and automation.
Opportunities for Telecom Operators and Policymakers

The report also highlights significant opportunities for telecom operators and policymakers to shape MENA’s digital future. Notably, 18% of enterprises in the region regard telecom operators as their primary partners for digital transformation, compared to a smaller global average. This trust positions operators as strategic collaborators in providing integrated, scalable, and secure solutions for key sectors, including healthcare, financial services, and public administration.
However, sustaining this momentum will require continued collaboration between public and private stakeholders. Governments must continue to create enabling policies, whereas telecom operators and enterprises must innovate to keep pace with growing demands. By fostering such partnerships, the MENA region can further solidify its leadership in the global tech landscape.
Roadmap for Sustained Innovation

The findings from GSMA’s report emphasize MENA’s bold vision for a digital future. With commitment from both public and private sectors, the region has the potential to redefine how digital technologies are utilized to benefit people, businesses, and society at large. As MENA enterprises continue to accelerate investments in AI, 5G, and other technologies, the region remains poised to set new global standards in digital transformation and innovation.
