Oppo Launches New Smartphone Factory in Egypt: Boosting Local Electronics Manufacturing

Egypt has taken a significant leap in its electronics manufacturing sector with the inauguration of Oppo’s new smartphone factory. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly presided over the opening, which aligns with the country’s ambitious “Egypt Makes Electronics” initiative. This government-led program aims to accelerate economic growth by reducing import dependency, fostering local production, and elevating Egypt’s status as a regional manufacturing hub. The factory represents Oppo’s commitment to invest $50 million in Egyptian facilities, reinforcing its position in the competitive global smartphone market.

Expanding Egypt’s Electronics Industry

The newly launched 24,000-square-metre plant currently boasts a monthly production capacity of 400,000 smartphones, equivalent to 4.8 million devices annually. Future plans aim to increase this to 500,000 units per month. The facility also provides employment opportunities for 2,000 workers, underscoring the factory’s role in boosting both economic growth and local job creation. According to Prime Minister Madbouly, initiatives like this have already attracted numerous companies to establish manufacturing facilities for mobile phones, tablets, and fiber optic cables, laying the groundwork for sustained growth across the sector.

Positioning Egypt as a Regional Manufacturing Hub

Oppo’s investment is part of a broader trend that has seen Egypt advance its electronics manufacturing capabilities in recent years. Currently, the country hosts 15 mobile phone and accessories brands, yielding a combined annual production capacity of 20 million units. These developments have been driven by approximately $20 million in industry investments, emphasizing Egypt’s growing prominence in the regional market. Local production not only strengthens Egypt’s economy but also helps reduce the reliance on costly imports, curbing the grey market and making mobile devices more affordable for Egyptian consumers.
