How Starlink Works

Starlink consists of thousands of small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), approximately 550 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. Each satellite is equipped with a Hall effect thruster, a type of electric propulsion system, and a set of solar panels to generate power. The satellites communicate with each other and with ground stations using laser beams, enabling the transmission of data at speeds of up to 1 terabit per second.

The Starlink network operates on the Ku and Ka frequency bands, which provide a high-gain, narrow-beam signal that can penetrate the atmosphere and reach the satellites in orbit. The system uses a phased array antenna, which allows it to steer and shape the beam to optimize the signal strength and minimize interference.

The system’s LEO orbit reduces the signal delay to around 20-30 milliseconds, comparable to fiber-optic networks. Starlink also provides a more secure and resilient connection, as the satellites can reroute traffic around failed or compromised nodes. The system’s redundancy and diversity of routes ensure that the network remains operational even in the event of a satellite failure or cyberattack.

Starlink has the potential to disrupt the telecommunications industry by providing a new, competitive option for internet connectivity. The system’s global coverage and low latency make it an attractive solution for remote or underserved communities, as well as for industries that require high-speed, low-latency connections, such as finance, healthcare, and education.
